Sony to start taking pre-orders for Personal 3D Viewer

At T3, we always thought the future of television would revolve around spectacular glasses-free 3D that could be viewed comfortably from any angle by all members of the family.

It seems Sony don’t agree. Today, the tech giant announced it will begin taking pre-orders for its Personal 3D Viewer (HMZT1) this Friday.

According to Sony’s press release, the HMZT1 “offers a spectacular new style of viewing for both 2D and 3D content… complete with the visual and audio experiences of being in a movie theatre.”

The bulky-looking headset is equipped with a high definition panel, which Sony says “provides high contrast, colour reproduction and fast response capabilities, videos are given added depth, allowing for smoother and higher-quality videos.”

Sony claims the HMZT1′s screen provides the equivalent of a 750-inch screen with a virtual viewing distance of 20m.

The HMZT1 is compatible with a range of 3D-enabled products, including the PlayStation 3, Blu-ray players and VAIO notebooks.

The inclusion of Sony’s gaming console is interesting in that it seems the only time we might be tempted to completely cut ourselves off from the outside world in the way that you would assume the HMZT1 requires.

We’ll have to reserve our final judgment until we get our hands on it but we’ll be approaching Sony’s newest toy with caution.

The HMZT1 will retail for $899. For more details head to Sony’s website.

Is this really the future of 3D? Or is this the Sony equivalent of Nintendo’s Virtual Boy? Share your thoughts on T3′s Twitter and Facebook feeds.
